Ta-Nehisi Coates & Jon Stewart: Understanding the Humiliation of Oppression

Ta-Nehisi Coates & Jon Stewart: Understanding the Humiliation of Oppression:

I got a lot out of this interview with The Message author Ta-Nehisi Coates by Jon Stewart for The Daily Show.

Best-selling author Ta-Nehisi Coates sits down with Jon Stewart to talk about his latest book, “The Message,” and reconciling past and present vestiges of oppression. They discuss his visits to Senegal, South Carolina, and The West Bank, how past atrocities like slavery and the holocaust can create a zero-sum game of control, the need for safety and statehood despite morally problematic systems, his exposure to Palestinian stories that have been hidden in American media, understanding the physical traumas of the Black community, and the purpose in writing to shape the world around us.

New Video Shows Vance Claiming Trump Won In 2020

New Video Shows Vance Claiming Trump Won In 2020:

Mediaite reports:

GOP vice presidential candidate JD Vance was grilled by comedian Jason Selvig [in 2022] about who actually won the 2020 presidential election in a clip posted to X on Thursday.

“Who won the 2020 election? Could you just answer? Did Donald Trump win?” Selvig asked Vance as he walked. “Yes,” Vance clearly replied. “He did win?” shot back a surprised Selvig. Vance then added, “Yep.”

“Will you concede if your opponent gets, if your opponent gets more votes, will you concede?” Selvig pressed. “I really feel bad for you, man,” Vance replied.

What the Bundy Bunkerville standoff foreshadowed

What the Bundy Bunkerville standoff foreshadowed:
Eric Parker from central Idaho aims his weapon from a bridge as protesters gather by the Bureau of Land Management’s base camp near Bunkerville, Nevada, in April 2014.

Ten years after the impasse between the Bundy family and the BLM, the doctrine of white oppression is widely embraced.

Workers At Tennessee Factory Claim They Were Not Allowed To Leave Even As Flood Waters Rose [VIDEO]

Workers At Tennessee Factory Claim They Were Not Allowed To Leave Even As Flood Waters Rose [VIDEO]:

The Associated Press reports:

As the rain from Hurricane Helene came down harder and harder, workers inside a plastics factory in rural Tennessee kept working. It wasn’t until water flooded into the parking lot and the power went out that the plant shut down and sent workers home.

Several never made it. The raging floodwaters swept 11 people away, and only five were rescued. Two of them are confirmed dead and part of the death toll across the affected states that passed 150 Tuesday.

Four others are still unaccounted for since they were washed away Friday in the small town of Erwin, Tennessee, where dozens of people were rescued off the roof of a hospital.

NBC News reports:

Workers have said they were allowed to leave when water was already swamping its parking lot in Erwin on Friday. In a call to her husband, Elias Mendoza, Bertha, 56, said she loved him, her son Guillermo Mendoza told NBC News. She asked him to also tell her children she loved them.

“Those were her last words,” said a tearful Mendoza, 33, a minister at First Baptist Church of Erwin. He confirmed her body was found Saturday. Meanwhile, survivors lashed out at the company for failing to warn workers and making them go to work that day.

Knoxville’s CBS affiliate reports:

One Impact Plastic’s employees — Jacob Ingram — said lives could have been saved, had employees been allowed to leave the facility sooner. “I didn’t hear anyone say ‘leave’ or nothing like that. I actually asked one of the higher ups,” Ingram said. “They told me ‘no, not yet.’ They have to ask someone before we was able to leave, even though it was already above the doors and the cars and everything else.”

The company released a statement following the tragedy. Its representatives said the company monitored weather conditions, dismissing employees when the facility lost power and water began to cover the parking lot. Ingram said that isn’t what happened. “No. The plant lost power, and we were still not to go home or leave,” he told WVLT News. “We were still there 15 to 20 minutes after the plant lost power.”

Videos from survivors are going viral on TikTok.

Blackmailed gay men are being forced to fight Vladmir Putin’s war in Ukraine

Chechen human rights group SK SOS has reported gay men in the Russian republic are being forcibly conscripted into Russia’s war with Ukraine. One man has died in the fighting.

As reported in a Telegram post by the outlawed organization — established in 2021 to provide assistance to LGBTQ+ individuals facing life-threatening persecution, discrimination, and abuse in Chechnya — a new wave of detentions in August follows the forced recruitment of gay men that started shortly before President Vladimir Putin’s “partial mobilization” of Russian men into the army in September 2022.

At least seven men detained for being gay have been blackmailed into “volunteering” for the war, given a choice to pay an exorbitant “ransom” of 1.5 million rubles (over €14,000) or to enlist. At least one of those men has died as a result.

In 2017, Chechnya undertook a purge of LGBTQ+ people, described in a report by the Council of Europe in 2021 as “the single most egregious example of violence against LGBTI people in Europe that has occurred in decades.”

Hundreds of LGBTQ+ individuals were entrapped through dating apps, reported by neighbors, and rounded up at LGBTQ+ gathering places, then tortured in a network of secret prisons. Over 100 gay men are estimated to have died in the state-sponsored persecution between 2017 and 2019.

The September 4 Telegram post by SK SOS detailed an “increasing wave of detentions” of gay men in Chechnya in late August this year. Security forces are using the same methods of entrapping gay men in the forced recruitment effort, then using their social media accounts to set up dates with other men and detain them for the same purpose.

State authorities’ methodology of terror has been the same since their first forced recruitments in 2022, with fabricated criminal charges and warnings of pre-trial detention — where detainees’ sexual orientation would be revealed to fellow inmates — followed by blackmailing them into the army.

In 2023, another raid in Chechnya netted several members of the LGBTQ+ community. While the women among them were released to their families the same evening, four men were forcibly sent to Ukraine, SK SOS reported. Their fates remain unknown.

Russia and Chechnya have been closely allied in their harassment of LGBTQ+ citizens in the one-time breakaway republic. In February last year, a 28-year-old gay Chechen refugee was arrested in Moscow as he tried to return to the Netherlands. He was traveling home after attending his father’s funeral.

In 2021, two young gay men who escaped from Chechnya after being tortured were caught by Russian police and returned to Chechen custody, the Russia LGBT Network reported. The pair were forced to make apology videos, among other humiliations.

Earlier this year, SK SOS reported that a gay man held in detention and tortured for over a year in the basement of a Grozny police station was inexplicably released and escaped to Europe. Rizvan Dadayev was detained by police in the summer of 2022 after he was outed by a group of local extortionists in the Chechen capital in a video distributed online, SK SOS told The Moscow Times.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has long held that “no gays” live in Chechnya.

Fox Amplifies “Election Fraud” Claim By Fake News Site

Fox Amplifies “Election Fraud” Claim By Fake News Site:

Mediaite reports:

Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo amplified a story from far-right fake news website The Gateway Pundit about election fraud, citing an article alleging that Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes may be trying to “hide” a potential “election integrity problem” in Arizona.

The article on the website quotes Arizona GOP Chairwoman Gina Swoboda [photo], who raised suspicion over a delay to a meeting with Fontes about the voter registration system and theorized about how this delay coincides with ballot printing for Maricopa County.

The website, founded by Trump loyalist Jim Hoft, has misidentified mass shooters on multiple occasions, naming innocent people as perpetuators or falsely claiming they are Democrats. The website was driven to bankruptcy after facing multiple defamation lawsuits.
